People give their response to the PPM Government

Friday,  August 26, 2005

After the People’s Progressive Movement Government’s first One Hundred days in office, Cayman Net News went on to the streets of George Town to find out what the people thought of the administration’s performance so far.

All interviewees were asked the following direct questions:

1. “What do you think of the new Government’s first 100 days in office?

2. What do you like about them?

3. Do you think they have kept their promises?

Emile S Levy

“The PPM Government is A – OK,” Emile S Levy told Cayman Net News who is a big fan of the newspaper. “The PPM is putting the Cayman Islands back on track,” he said adding how encouraged he was over how things were going.

Patricia Estwick

‘The new Government is doing a good job,” said Patricia Estwick. “I like their insight and inclusivity in terms of the way they chose the boards ensuring that there is not a conflict of interest. And I like the fact that their priorities are education and restoration and I think they’re doing a great job.

Fiona Chambers

A billing officer, Fiona Chambers told Cayman Net News: “I think the Government’s reactions are quicker. They have kept their promises so far, such as improving the road by the Bodden Town Primary School. It is safer and wider now. Also I have some friends who work at the hospital, and a lot of them have more faith with the new Government that’s in,” she added.

Hezlin Whittaker

“Everything is basically new,” said Hezlin Whittaker. “They have done a few things so far I agree with. Eg the housing scheme, they’ve put a stop to that and are reviewing it. Also the Dock in West Bay (they have stopped) that was unnecessary. I don’t think I’ve heard much about the Leader of Government Business or what he has been doing”.

Bruce Hayles

“So far I think it’s too early to predict how they’re doing,” said Bruce Hayles. “But what I want them to do mostly is to fix the sheds down on the public beach. The sun is killing us, it’s really too much. They haven’t done it yet and it’s hot. I take my kids down there and it’s scorching.

  • “I think they are still in the campaign mood,” said Danny Smith. “I think the other Government was doing a better job. Frank McField and his sister who were running for election in George Town, I saw them in an interview. They said something that was really true, that the people had voted out a good government simply for revenge. That revenge was over the status issue.”

  • Quatro Webster said: “They are better than the last lot. I would say that in the police department they have more people and more officers, and more equipment to do the job.”

  • “So far for now it’s OK,” Merlin Ebanks said:”I think we need to give them a break, give them a chance. I would say nothing I’ve seen suggests that they don’t intend to keep their promises. They’re still new, so you cannot condemn them yet. So far they are doing alright, but it is really too early to say.”

  • “I’m not interested in politics,” said Mercita Dunkley . “I have found from past experience that when they are in, they do not do what they’ve promised to do, but I think that most of the people who got in are pretty cool. I’m glad McKeeva Bush doesn’t have so much power any more.”

  • Billy Bryan said: “I am off to college in Arizona soon. I am not really very interested in politics here, and I have not kept very well up to date with it but I am not against them. I am just not really interested.”
