COMMENTARY
Pat Robertson – An Honest Man

Fr. Sean Major-Campbell
Wednesday, August 31, 2005
Congratulations are in order for the Rev. Pat Robertson. Have you heard the
furore, over his Christian, and enlightened comments re Hugo Chavez the
President of Venezuela?
Pat Robertson is a fundamentalist at heart. This evangelical conservative
is to be commended for his brutal honesty and clear concise expression of an
obviously consistent approach to life. In true fundamentalist fashion, he
advocates the “taking out” of Chavez.
A couple months ago, I noted that a fundamentalist by any name is still the
same! That is whether that person is Christian, Jewish, Islamic, or any
religious persuasion for that matter. Their minds operate in a certain way.
What makes the mind of Patty any different from that of a suicide bomber? I
will tell you. Patty would never commit suicide. He is a committed Christian
of good societal standing. He loves life, and would never entertain any talk
on such subjects as abortion or stem-cell research.
An excellent student of the bible, he would affirm the biblical example of
treating the Canaanites in less than human ways. You remember how in Zechariah
14:21, the prophet notes that on a certain day, there would no longer be a
Canaanite in the house of the Lord. When Isaac blessed Jacob, (Genesis 28:1)
he strongly reminded him never to marry a Canaanite Woman.
In fact the Israelites interpreted their occupation and possession of
Canaan as God’s will for them to get rid of the Canaanites. Their law was so
justice-oriented that it called for “an eye for an eye”. This reminds me very
much of those persons who love life so much that they would set a bomb at an
abortion clinic!
Back to Patty and his convictions. His ‘call’ for assassination leaves no
doubt about his recommendation. The integrity of his sincerity should never be
questioned. He knows the value of oil; and his heart is where his treasure is.
Maybe the club should use as its motto, ‘Oil for Life’ or ‘Life for Oil.’
The foundational philosophy of fundamentalism is such that its adherents
are gifted with such powers that they are able to make definitive statements
in their own authority; away with empirical data and research.
That is why Pat Robertson knows that feminism leads to lesbianism. In a
fundraising letter written in 1992, he brilliantly noted, “The feminist agenda
is not about equal rights for women. It is about a socialist, anti-family
political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their
children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians.”
Some of his other enlightened positions include his view of the 11
September, 2001 terrorist attacks.
He noted for example that this was due to God’s lifting his protection from
the United States of America. He also knows that people other than Christians
or Jews are not able to govern a country. In ‘The New World Order’ he
intelligently asks, “Can you imagine someone like Mahatma Ghandi as Minister
of health, education, and welfare?”
In fact, Pat states, “If anybody ever understood what Hindus really
believe, there would be no doubt that they have no business administering
government policies in a country that favours freedom and equality.”
As a Christian Country, we in Cayman may want to remember that family
planning is a dangerous thing. Pat Robertson maintains that, “…it is teaching
children to fornicate, teaching people to have adultery, every kind of
bestiality, homosexuality, lesbianism, every thing that the bible condemns.”
This particular moment of his insight was on the 700 Club in April 1991.
You might recall that in December we really got a good shake from an
earthquake. Note Pat’s warning when commenting on a Gay Pride festival held in
Orlando, Florida in 1998, “If the wide spread practice of homosexuality will
bring about the destruction of your nation, if it will bring about terrorist
bombs, if it will bring about earthquakes, tornados, and possibly a meteor, it
isn’t something we ought to open our arms to.”
The man knows what he believes. He owns it. He is not about to sign any
such thing as name withheld by request. He takes great pride in his NONSENSE;
and we ought to give credit where it is due.
By the way, did you know that the Lion’s Centre, and the Truman Bodden
Sports Complex combined would not hold the great Christian crowds that would
flock to a crusade called by Patty. That is because he is a foreigner who
loves the Lord dearly. Fundraisers just think about the possibility!
I have met some of the Patty-minded personalities in my time. Sometime ago
two were most upset with me because I noted that Jesus was never a Christian.
I recall meeting a uniformed police officer at the Central Police Station who
upon seeing the clergy collar proceeded to tell me why I was in the wrong
church community.
These individuals are not concerned about their abuse of their employers’
time, when they abuse others for simply exercising their freedom of religious
expression.
Never mind Pat Robertson’s lacking in P.R. skills like my-self. He is still
a good Christian guy. He will continue to seek souls for the kingdom.
One only hopes that some will at least seek to walk in line with God’s
Kingdom.
