Jamaica and West Indies’ opening batsman Chris Gayle turned in a fine all-round performance to earn the man-of-the-match award on his debut for Worcestershire in a National Cricket League Division One day/night match against Lancashire at Old Trafford, Manchester on Wednesday.

The left hander first picked up two wickets for 25 runs off his six overs, before smashing an attacking 53 runs when his team chased.

Winning the toss and electing to bat, Lancashire made 195 for nine from their allotted 45 overs with former Australian opener Stuart Law hitting a top score of with 82. The knock came from 86 balls and it included 10 boundaries and one six.

In reply Worcestershire reached 196 for six with more than five overs to spare.

Gayle shared in an opening stand of 73 with Stephen Moore, who made 22, before he was dismissed, when Glen Chappell bowled him in the 13th over. His knock included eight boundaries and one six and came from 41 balls.

Gayle was supported by former England one-day player Vikram Solanki, who hit 31 and Ben Smith, 30.

Lancashire: 195 for nine (Stuart Law 82, Warren Hegg 29, Kyle Hogg 23; Chris Gayle 2-25, Gareth Batty 2-34)

Worcestershire: 196 for six (Chris Gayle 53, Vikram Solanki 31, Ben Smith, 30; Glen Chapple 4-23).
