Church convention focuses on hope as ministers come together

Four local pastors gathered together this week to host a convention entitled: “Keeping Hope Alive.” From last Sunday 4 to Wednesday 7 September at the Church of God Chapel on Walkers Road and Academy Way in George Town, the pastors led worshipers in a vision of hope.

This is the Church of God of the Cayman Islands’ ninth “Fall Convention”, and according to one of the pastors, Reverend Stanwick Myles who pastors the West Bay Church of God Chapel, the choice of the theme reflected that many people are still struggling to get their lives back in order, and hope is vital to the process.

At this time, with the painful memories of Hurricane Ivan’s devastation renewed by Hurricane Katrina’s onslaught through the US Gulf Coast, the members of the various chapels of the Church of God in the Cayman Islands used this theme to focus on “Keeping Hope Alive”.

A similar series of meetings were held last September while Hurricane Ivan headed slowly towards these shores, and at those meetings prayers were offered up for God’s protection.

“While the winds were not dissipated as hoped and prayed for, the members clearly celebrated God’s mercy during those horrible 30-plus hours,” said Pastor Alson. Reverend William Peguero, Pastor of the Frank Sound Church, Reverend Winston Rose, of the Bodden Town Church and Reverend Alson Ebanks, who pastors the George Town congregation, also spoke at this year’s convention, all of whom were, together with Pastor Myles, vitally involved in the “Love in Action” initiative of the Cayman Ministers’ Association, a project chaired by Pastor Al Ebanks of the Agape Family Worship Centre.

After Hurricane Ivan, “Love in Action” provided both materials and labour to those who were in need of having their homes rebuilt or repaired.

The Church of God Chapel on Walkers Road sustained some damage by Hurricane Ivan, but a new seam roof is now in place, a generous gift of a church family, whose charity has kept hope alive for many in this thriving congregation.

Members of the community are invited to join these believers from across the Island for this time of celebration and encouragement.
