At the final IAAF Golden League athletics meet in Berlin,
Germany, Jamaican athletes did very well in the sprint events, taking three
gold medals.
In the men’s 100 metres sprint, Dwight Thomas took the
win in 10.01, over Martinique-born Frenchman Ronald Poignon. Jason Gardner
from Great Britain took third. The time would have been a personal best for
Thomas little over a week ago, before he set his best time of 10 seconds dead.
In the 200 metres sprint, Christopher Williams took gold
in a time of 20.33 over Tyree Washington of the USA and Jacey Harper of
Tinidad. This was only .01 seconds off Williams’ season’s best time set last
week in Italy.
Jamaica’s third win came in the women’s 100 metres
hurdles, where the Jamaican pair of Brigitte Foster-Hylton and Delloreen
Ennis-London continued their dominant form. The race was won by Foster-Hylton
in a time of 12.63, with Ennis-London second in 12.74.
There were other strong performances by Jamaican athletes
as well.
In the ‘B’ final of the 100 metres sprint, Ainsley Waugh
took the win, taking it from Nigeria’s Olusoji Fasuba in the photo finish.
In the 400 metres hurdles, Maurice Wignall finished
fourth in 13.58, only .03 seconds off third place. The race was won by
Dominique Arnold in 13.20.
In the women’s 100 metres sprint, Sherone Simpson took a
fifth place for Jamaica. Her time of 11.17 was equal with the time of fourth
place, and only .01 off third. The race was won by Christine Arron of France
in 11.01.
Jamaican triple jumper Trecia Smith withdrew from the
meeting, which left Tatyana Lebedeva with very little resistance on her way to
her sixth win the the Golden League series. This means that Lebedeva will take
home the $1,000,000 jackpot that was on offer for athletes who could win their
event in all six of the Golden League meets.
