The Cayman Islands Humane Society held a special sale for
curios and collectibles outside the Humane Society Shelter, North Sound Road
on Saturday 3 September.
Thrift Shop coordinator, Suzanna Gatta, said that she had
the idea after seeing an old, ornate chair in the Humane Society’s ‘Claws It’
Thrift Shop:
“We gave it a price of just a few dollars on the chair,
but really it was worth more than that,” she said.
“We realized that we could get more money for some of the
special things people had donated, so the thrift shop staff started putting
things aside. We have been collecting them for about three months now, and
decided to have a special ‘Sale of Collectibles.’
Not all the items were old or second hand. “The Venture
Gallery donated 30 toy owls, each one dressed for different professions. There
was a doctor, a teacher and so on. They are brand new and still in their
boxes.
“Their retail value was $95 but we were selling them for
$30 each. I think we will sell the rest at Christmas time,” she said.
“We also sold two Irish crystal cut wine goblets for CI
$90. In the end, that lovely chair sold for $50, which was much more that we
would have got for it in the thrift shop,” Mrs Gatta said.
“We really want to thank the members of the public, who
donated all these special things,” she added.
Customers at the sale, Steve and Tracey Surrey, had found
some bargains, and had bought some of the professional owls set.
“I’ve found four unique Christmas presents to take back
to the UK,” Mrs Surrey said. “Where else could you find beautiful things like
these, and at this price? We are really addicted to shopping at the Humane
Society.”
