LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Remembering Ivan and helping for Katrina
Thursday, September 8, 2005
Dear Sir,
The images we are seeing in the news of the catastrophic
disaster New Orleans is experiencing from Hurricane Katrina is FAR too close
to home for many of us here on Grand Cayman.
These are sombering memories. Memories of what our Island
looked like just one year ago. We may not have had the resources and help they
have, but we were also fortunate not to have the loss of life they have had.
But have MUCH more to be thankful for too.We had
kindness, humanitarianism, peace and strangers that became friends and family.
We had the strength of prayer, gratefulness, positive
spirit and each other. We were alone on an Island in the middle of the
Caribbean, but together united in spirit and our efforts to recover.
We are still recovering.
But I attended a fund raiser for the Red Cross Relief
Fund for New Orleans, at OBar/Attic, (Monday 5 Septemebr). It was as always,
the inspiration and reminder of why I love this Island so much…. the people
and spirit here.
While many are still struggling to recover here, they are
giving whatever they can to others in need. Sending money, prayers and kind
words to give hope and strength.
We all have our struggles and strife in life. But I
encourage you to give in any way you can to those enduring what must seem
overwhelmingly hopeless in New Orleans. We must not forget, we share this
planet and this time on it.
Kudos to the people that organized and contributed to the
event, they are real heroes.
