Fr. Sean Major-Campbell presented Robert Hamaty, the Honorary Jamaican Consul representative for the Cayman Islands, with a plaque, on Monday 12 September.

“This plaque is in celebration of the excellent ministry that is done by the office of the Jamaican Consulate,” Fr Sean said.

The plaque was also given to mark the recent Jamaican independence celebrations. It was given on behalf of the Diocese of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, represented here by St George’s Anglican Church.

Robert Hamaty, who has held the honorary office of Jamaican Consul here since 1992, explained the work of the office: “It is part of the work of the Consulate to encourage trade between Jamaica and the Cayman Islands,” Mr Hamaty said.

The Jamaican Consul also serves the purpose of helping provide visas for people here who belong to countries that Jamaica does not have a visa abolition agreement with, Mr Hamaty said.

The Consul helps to look after the Jamaican community here by assisting with immigration problems, and helping provide emergency travel documents when Jamaicans find their passports are either lost or expired. “We have also helped provide them with airfares back to Jamaica, if we feel their need is genuine,” he said.

The Consul has also been instrumental in raising funds for medical expenses.

“This office comes under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade in Jamaica. It is not an embassy, so the funding for the running of this office mainly comes from the Jamaican community in the Cayman Islands, donations come through committee members,” Mr Hamaty explained.
