St Ignatius KG-Year 6 School marked Ivan’s second anniversary, by wearing specially printed T-shirts with the logo, “St Ignatius Triumphs over Ivan.”

Principal of the school, Jennifer Paul-O’Donnell said, “We felt it would be a good idea to wear our T-shirts because it was one year ago that Ivan struck. Also, other people are suffering what we suffered, (from hurricane Katrina) so we saw it as an opportunity to help them.”

Proceeds from the T-shirt wearing day will go to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina, she said.

Glenn Whewell, the St Ignatius School Chaplain, explained the school’s relief effort:

After Hurricane Ivan, St Ignatius received a donation from another Catholic school; so we thought that it would be nice to identify a school there (in Louisiana) and return the favour.”

The help that St Ignatius is offering is a three-tiered approach, with immediate, short-term and long-term strategies, he said.

“The immediate relief effort consisted of funds raised from two day when the children could come to school in civilian clothes, for a donation.

“The money raised is being sent to two St Ignatius graduates, Claire Rohedler and Karen Tomlinson, who are presently volunteering in Louisiana. The money raised will be used directly to help them in their relief efforts,” he said.

“The ‘Short-Term Plan consists of saving to collect school supplies such as uniforms to donate to a similar Catholic school there. We are encouraging all our students to donate one at least one item.

“The Long-term plan consists of a ‘Shoebox Appeal’ where children are asked to fill a shoebox with items that will be taken to children there. The children who will receive the shoebox will be children chosen by St Ignatius students. This final is included in the school curriculum.”
