LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Efforts to stop crime applauded
Friday, September 30, 2005
Dear Sir,
We are routine visitors to the Cayman Islands after
touring all of the Caribbean; we “discovered” what many, especially
Caymanians, had known for so long: the Caymans are a small and wonderful
treasure.
Obviously in the wake of the tragedy of Ivan, a rise in
strife and crime should have been anticipated; disasters seem to always
precipitate both the best and worst in people.
I would have to admit some trepidation at bringing my
family to the Caymans now in light of the extreme rise in crime. We all know
this is a classic example of a few bad apples spoiling the barrel but the
reality still exists. The spike in crime in Cayman does affect choices made
by tourists, which are a major lifeblood of the Islands.
To that end, I would like to join with resident
Caymanians to applaud the efforts of the Chamber of Commerce to call for
changes and policing to stem the rising tide of crime. The aftermath of the
scars of Ivan will take a long time to heal. We can all hope this is another
major step in that direction.
