Cubans stop off on Cayman Brac

Friday,  October 14, 2005

Officials on Cayman Brac reported that on Tuesday, 11 October, a small boat with six Cuban men on board arrived there, at 6:00 am. The vessel, described as a 16 ft fibreglass boat with a diesel engine, stopped at Channel Dock on the south side of the Island.

Residents on the Island reported to Cayman Net News that a man was found walking along the road on the south side of the Island a little before 6:00 am.

One of the boat’s occupants, believed to be this man, initially requested that he be returned to Cuba. The official report is that he changed his mind when advised of the normal arrangements and timescales for repatriating Cuban nationals, and opted instead to continue on.

The report said the Cubans subsequently departed Cayman Brac shortly thereafter, at 7:15 am. Officials escorted the vessel several miles off shore and reported that the boat was last seen at 9:45 am.
