The Cayman Islands Little League started out its Fun Fall season last weekend. As with any new season, and the presence of a large number of new players, confusion reigned at the start, as young players were not certain in which team they were, on which diamond they were supposed to be, and just uncertain in general.

However, the volunteers who serve as coaches and officials soon had them sorted out and warming up for their first games. Although instructions like “You take short stop” was often greeted with stares of blank incomprehension, the day was a learning experience for all, and the players soon found their places on the field.

Even though the game was occasionally held up to save players from swinging bats bigger and almost as heavy as they were, things generally went smoothly. More importantly however, it was clear that the young players were enjoying themselves immensely, as were the parents and volunteers who make Little League a possibility.

The entire programme is run by volunteers, who realise that, even though they have busy lives, the children need their help and attention now if they are to become everything they can be.

The volunteers also get to share unique moments with the players, like when a player connects with the ball for the first time, or takes a first catch. In the end, the experience is just as rewarding for the volunteers as for the players.

Games take place every Friday from 6:00 pm and every Saturday from 4:00 pm at the Field of Dreams, and spectators are welcome to come and see how the stars of the future are developed.
