Hellcats maul Pirates in Flag final game
Tuesday, October 18, 2005
At the end of a long hard season, DJL Pirates and West Bay Hellcats faced off in the Championship game.
Although the Hellcats made some good progress early on, the first dangerous move came from the Pirates. With the best offence in the league, and the number one quarterback, Carlo Ylagan, the team was always going to be hard to contain.
Pirates wide receiver Ransfor Welcome was soon through for what he thought was a touchdown, but was called back for flag guarding.
Although the Pirates were unable to get through again on the rest of the play, the Hellcats were unable to make any impression during their next possession, turning over possession on an intercept by Selkirk Watler. Pirates then managed two 10 yard runs, followed by a beautiful 20 yard pass by Ylagan to Phill O’Connor. The Pirates kept up the momentum, and two plays later it was Lance Worth who forced his way past a defender and into the end zone for a touchdown. Ylagan then found Welcome in the end zone for the conversion, picking up the extra point.
Although Pirates had seemed in control, the score seemed to jerk the Hellcats into action, as they suddenly found their rhythm in the game.
Quarterback Jacob Ebanks found Clay Coleman for a 20 yard gain, and then made another 20 with Antonio Hanna. Ebanks and Coleman teamed up again for the touchdown, putting the Hellcats on the board with only minutes to go in the first half. However, the Hellcats could not score the conversion.
At the end of the first half, it was 7-6 in favour of the Pirates. The Hellcats started the second half off well, pushing their way up to the Pirates line. However, a pass to Coleman in the end zone was blocked, and the Hellcats turned over possession on the next play.
The Hellcats defence drove the Pirates backwards on a couple of plays, and were soon back in possession. Ebanks passed to Soloman who drove for a 15-yard gain. The Hellcats continued their drive up the field, and a flag for roughing the passer allowed them to move into a good scoring position.
Ebanks then found Hanna for the Hellcats’ second touchdown, but once again they were unable to convert, leaving them with a 12-7 lead, well within striking distance for the Pirates.
However, things were clearly not going the way of the Pirates, as it started to rain, making handling very difficult. Although they launched a couple of valiant attempts, the Pirates were soon forced to accept the inevitable, as the Hellcats took the trophy 12-7.
