The Hon. Courtney Walsh, O.J.
Wednesday, October 19, 2005
He is the former holder of the World Record for wickets
taken in Test cricket: five hundred and nineteen (519) and he is the first man
to have taken more than five hundred (500) Test wickets. He has played in 132
Test matches, more than any other West Indian player. He was the first fast
bowler to captain the West Indies and he also captained Jamaica and
Gloucestershire County in England. He is one of only three West Indian bowlers
to take a “hat-trick” in Test cricket (three wickets in three consecutive
balls).
He once took five for one run in a limited over
international against Sri Lanka and he has taken more wickets in that type of
game than any other West Indian bowler. He once took all ten wickets in an
innings in a schoolboy cricket match. As a batsman, he has been not out more
times and made more zeros than any other Test cricketer.
He won the Carrera Sports Foundation Sportsman of the
Year Award three times in a row.
