Lighting Basics

Floor lamps are also designed to illuminate either overhead or to provide light for reading.  Wall sconces provide ambient lighting in hallways and rooms. Many new styles are also appearing to create interest and can be the main focal point of a room.

Sometimes lighting is not a key focal point in a design project due to a lack of interest and availability of choices here on the Island. We tend to see the same fixtures used to light up our environments. Understanding the different types of fixtures and functions can help you make an interesting and unique choice for your next room make-over or renovation project.

Basic lighting is overhead ceiling light with accent lighting available for either table tops, floor or wall sconces.  The function of lighting is to provide enough light to see in general with task lighting a key especially in work environments.  Table lamps now come in a variety of designs just like furniture styles of plantation, contemporary, nautical themed such as fish lamps and wicker too.

Still more to come on lighting next week with flush mounts, hanging pendants and track lighting sets and how they can be featured in your design.
