Rugby pitch rehabilitation

Deep tyre tracks scarred the South Sound rugby pitch
Monday, November 7, 2005
In spite of loads of hard work to repair the pitch at the South Sound Rugby Club before the weekend, not enough could be done to have the pitch ready. This forced the postponement of the Junior programmes scheduled for Saturday 5 November.
The pitch was seriously damaged on the night of Saturday 29 October, when a vehicle or vehicles raced onto the pitch, which was soft after it had been soaked with rain the previous days.
The vehicles spun out repeatedly, damaging not only the pitch, but also the irrigation system, and setting back the rehabilitation of the pitch quite a bit. The pitch had only recently recovered sufficiently from Hurricane Ivan to make serious rugby games a viable option again.
Extensive work has already gone into the repair of the pitch, and it is expected that all junior programmes will be able to go ahead this week, although on a limited basis.
The work on the pitch was extremely urgent, as many development activities had been planned for the coming weeks, as well as league rugby games.
However, if the pitch was unavailable, it would lead to the wholesale scrapping of the local rugby season.
Technical Director Richard Adams thanked everyone who had offered their help in the aftermath of what could have been a complete disaster for the club.
“I am delighted with the helpful responses from so many that have allowed us to get this problem fixed so quickly,” said Mr Adams.
