Swimmers defend territorial waters

Local and international swimmers gathered at the Lions Aquatics Centre on Friday afternoon, 4 November to prepare themselves for the Cayman Islands’ biggest swim meet, the Mike Lockwood Memorial Meet.
Three teams from Jamaica made the journey to Cayman to take on the Cayman swimmers on their home turf. The teams from Tornadoes, Yspeedos, and Dolphins brought out swimmers in all age groups to face the swimmers from Stingray Swim Club and other local entries.
The event proved as much of a social occasion as a sporting one, as swimmers from the two countries shared their love for the sport and the healthy lifestyle that goes along with it.
The parents of the young athletes were also as enthusiastic as ever in their support, cheering their favourite swimmers on to doing their best in what was a very strong field.
The meet was held pretty early in the swimming season, but with athletes in many different sports forced to adapt their training schedules to peak for the Commonwealth Games in March, the swimmers were able to use this occasion to test their form.
Although the local swimmers get to compete against international swimmers at a number of occasions during the year, this was a rare opportunity for them to welcome international competitors to the local facilities.
As the swimmers are used to facing the same competitors at every local meet, the unknown international competitors forced them to be on their toes, as complacency could cost them the race.
For more on the event and results, keep an eye on Cayman Net News later in the week.
