Arnett Gardens takes End-of-Round Final
Wednesday, November 9, 2005
With the end-of-round final over the weekend, the midweek
games paled in comparison. However, with the result of the final now known, it
is interesting to look back and see how the teams stacked up last Wednesday.
Even though they eventually went on to win the
end-of-round final, Arnett Gardens had a hard fight to even get to the final.
Although they were expected to have an easy win over Constant Spring, who are
stuck at the bottom of the points ladder, Arnett had to fight all the way to
the final whistle.
The first half of the game was goalless, leaving it wide
open in the second half. Arnett was first to strike in the 57th minute off
Kevin Wilson, and stretched their lead to 2-0 through a Jonathan Williams
strike in the 60th minute.
Two minutes later, Constant Spring came back with a goal
of their own through Carl Brown, to keep them within striking distance.
In time added on at the end of the second half, Constant
Spring almost levelled the game, as a strike that had the keeper well beaten
went just wide of goal. The final whistle brought relief for Arnett, as the
win assured them of maintaining their second place in the points table, and a
spot in the final.
Harbour View, eventual runners-up in the final,
maintained their lead at the top of the table by taking down Waterhouse 3-1.
Waterhouse had also been hopeful of a final berth, but their loss put paid to
their chances.
Harbour View seemed to be the dominant team in the
league, and judging by their midweek result, it would have been very difficult
to predict their downfall against Arnett in the final. Even though Harbour
View went behind in the 22nd minute, they drew level before the end of the
half, and completely dominated the second half for a clear win.
Portmore United was also in the hunt for a place in the
final, and although they won their game against Reno 1-0 after a 10th minute
strike by Jason Morrison, Arnett Garden’s win scupperred any hope they had of
progressing.
Tivoli Gardens was another finals hopeful in action, but
crashed to Village United 3-2, on the back of an own goal by Victor Thompson,
which put Village 3-1 ahead in the 66th minute.
