Cayman Little League in need of support

Little Leaguers, in or out of uniform, will soon be
selling tickets around the island to help fund the
league, and organisers ask that the public will go out
of their way to support them.

As an all-volunteer sports programme, with free participation for all children, the Cayman Islands Little League is still putting children first.
The ‘Field of Dreams’ is full of action, with the league running it’s annual ‘Fun Fall Season’ for kids.
The season is going well, and the kids are enjoying themselves to no end. The games are played on Friday evenings and late Saturday afternoons, avoiding conflict with other sports, as well as the heat of the day. In spite of the fact that the fields drain very well, there have been a couple of weather-related interruptions to the season.
Various adult leagues also use the facilities at the ‘Field of Dreams’, including corporate, co-ed, fast or slow-pitch.
The League did however decide not to hold its annual fundraising auction this year. “It’s still tough,” explained a spokesperson.
“We’re still not back in our home yet, but soon,” she continued. “Most of us involved have young families; many, many are still rebuilding our homes, our businesses, our lives. Spending time with our kids has to come first. To try to add fund-raising on top of that, and then go out and ask other max-ed out people to donate and come to an event, to spend money somewhat ‘foolishly’, it’s just not right yet.”
To fill the fund-raising gap for badly needed funds, the League is holding a raffle, with tickets going on sale this week.
The prize draw will take place on Saturday 3 December to coincide with the end of the season. Tickets will be $5 each, with books of 20 tickets available for $100. Entrants stand a chance to win $5000, or 1000 times the cost of one ticket.
As the timing is perfect for a Christmas shopping spree, the raffle is being called ‘Cash for Christmas’.
In addition to the raffle, the Little League is also aiming to hold a fund-raising golf tournament.
Although the traditional Little League auctions has been cancelled this year, it will be back in 2006, and organisers are appealing to prospective donors to hold over local services or goods that they would have donated to this year’s effort for next year.
“We do have some amazing auction items on ice,” said an
organiser.
“They survived Ivan, due to great care and a little luck. The beauty of some of the unique items is they only go up in value.”
Little League is asking everyone who has ever played on the Field of Dreams or known a Little League player, to buy at least one raffle ticket. To buy a complete book of tickets, contact Pam Parsons at 916-0018 or e-mail
