In the end it was all about kids from the Cayman Brac High School and Cayman Prep & High as those schools word masters topped the ranks during the final secondary school eliminations in the annual Lions Club Spelling Bee competition.

During two “wordy” evenings, teenage students displayed their mastery by aptly spelling words like zucchini, annihilate and chrysanthemum.

The first evening was closely contested, with Kiah Keswick of Cayman Prep gaining 12 points to edge out Renee Lindo of George Hicks and Kristin McLean of Cayman Academy – each of whom scored 11 points.

Representing Cayman Brac High, Principal Shirley Wahler’s children dominated the second evening of the preliminaries, with Brendan Wahler gaining 13 points and his sister Elizabeth scoring 10.

Kimone Chambers of John Gray High placed third, but only after a two-way tie and a terse spell-off with Malcolm Hurlston, with the final words being chauvinism and seismograph.

With 32 points, the Cayman Brac High team also topped the total school points awarded; followed by Triple C with 26 school points, and Cayman Prep & High with 25. George Hicks (19), Cayman Academy (18), John Gray (15), and Wesleyan Christian Academy (8) rounded out the remaining school point totals.

Education Officer for Language Arts Gloria Pollard congratulated the students, as well as the teachers, parents and sponsors, and expressed special gratitude to the spell-masters, judges and Lions Club representatives.

She also encourages the public to attend the grand Spelling Bee finale on Tuesday, 22 November at the Mary Miller Hall in Red Bay.

Mrs Pollard also encourages the public to attend and support the junior speller competitors participating in the Royal Bank of Canada Primary School Spelling Bee Competition.

Their finals will be held at 6:30 pm on Thursday, 24 November, at the Mary Miller Hall, Red Bay.
