As part of the lead up to the country’s story telling
festival, Gimistory 2005, the Cayman National Cultural Foundation (CNCF) ran
free workshops in the age old art of storytelling recently, at the Kings
Sports Centre, George Town. The workshops were for children and adults.
The children’s workshop was conducted by Edgar Ortiz, a
professional and established storyteller from Costa Rica and storyteller Ken
Corsbie from Guyana instructed local teachers both in the art of telling
stories, and in the teaching of storytelling.
Edgar Ortiz started storytelling in 1996 after attending
theatre workshops given by a group of teachers from Italy, Mexico and Cuba.
His first show was called ‘Around the World with eight Stories.’
In Costa Rica, Mr Ortiz has performed at special
‘Storytelling Nights,’ during the National Arts Festival, and has spoken at
the University of Costa Rica on ‘The Art of Storytelling.’
On Wednesday, Mr Ortiz was encouraging one of the
children in his workshop, seven-year old Dylan Bostock, to tell the story of
‘The Golden Arm.’
The children who attended the storytelling workshop will
perform on the opening storytelling night at the amphitheatre in Dart Park,
South Sound on 25 November, and the novices from the adult class will perform
on 30 November also at Dart Park in South Sound.
The teachers and children who took part in the workshops
were selected for the event in cooperation with the Education Department..
