LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Why the continued friction regarding visas?
Tuesday, November 22, 2005
Dear Sir,
I fail to understand why there is continued friction regarding the visa
topic! It is a fact that we are a small country. It is a fact that other
nationalities have to obtain visas to travel here. And it is a fact that with
the increased violence and crime in Jamaica, even the “legal” Jamaicans resident
in Cayman are happy to see measures taken to stem the flow of potential
criminals and other undesirables into Cayman from Jamaica.
I have travelled to many other countries and have had to apply for an entry
visa for numerous trips. So what? It is a process deemed necessary for the total
protection of the country and its citizens.
While it is true that in years past, Jamaica provided many services for
Caymanians and had close ties to this island, it is also true that Cayman
provides many opportunities for Jamaicans here.
The fact that we now find it necessary to put in place measures of screening
and protection should hardly be cause for concern to anyone, except perhaps
those who don’t qualify. Change happens and is critical to any process. Accept
it and move on.
