LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Where is the Television choice?
Wednesday, December 14, 2005
Dear Sir,
I would like to respond to your editorial entitled
“Cayman’s plethora of media” of Cayman Net News last Thursday, 8
December. I must agree that although it seems like a bit of overkill in terms
of radio broadcasts, there must be something fueling the market otherwise
these stations would all be on death row.
But it seems as if the healthy competition is in fact
pushing the envelope in terms of choice and quality. There’s a station for any
mood that may take you here in Cayman from country to easy listening to top 40
to hip hop to reggae to dance. Nearly every type of music is offered with
regular radio personalities facilitating locally driven programming in almost
as complex diversity.
Political shows, cooking shows, music shows, request
shows, again, we see the competition driving broadcasters to continue to bring
new material to the airwaves, constantly challenging the consumer’s opinions,
tastes and moods.
Where is this depth of content in television in Cayman?
Nowhere.
CITN is it. And that means if we want some local
programming, if we want to see ourselves and our lives, if we want to see the
people of Cayman talking about what affects them then we’re bound by the
programming decisions of CITN.
And right now that means 2 daily shows, both of which are
fairly news oriented and the occasional special event live broadcast.
I would really like to see some competition in this area
that is clearly lacking the healthy rivalry of the radio waves.
Where’s the passion and innovation TV is supposed to
present us with? Where are the stories about Cayman and her people??
I’ve heard that Net News TV is on the way and if
that’s true then I can’t wait because I’m tired of watching the same point of
view on Cayman everyday.
I watch the streaming news program online regularly and I
think it’s a great start. Hurry up Net News TV - Cayman needs you!
R. Scott.
