The Foster’s National League has once again delivered a
action filled weekend of football, with a surprise thrown in just for good
measure.
The first game of the weekend saw George Town SC take on
Bodden Town FC at the Annex.
The Bodden Town team was being carefully watched by Coach
Elbert Mclean. Many of the players in the team had made their way up through
his schools programme and now find themselves playing at the top level of
local football.
The team was still at the bottom of the Eastern Zone, but
were ready to take the fight to their opponents. George Town, in second
position in the Western Zone, were looking to avenge their defeat at the hands
of Future the previous weekend. As soon as the game started, it was clear that
George Town meant business.
The team played hard and fast, and by the end of the
first half George Town was 3-0 up. Although Bodden Town had a couple of
opportunities, they could not turn those into points, and fell even further
behind as George Town scored two more goals in the second half, to take the
score out to 5-0 for a clear win.
Scholars International, still undefeated and in the lead
in the Western Zone, took on East End United. Although Scholars were the clear
favourites for the match, East End put up a good fight, and managed to score
against a Scholars team who, up until that point, had had only four goals
scored against them in six matches.
However, one goal was not to be enough, as Scholars took
the match 3-1 to remain at the top of the Western Zone.
North Side FC took on Sunset FC in a match that was
expected to go Sunset’s way. Sunset had occupied second position in the
Eastern Zone until recently, when they dropped down one place to third. North
Side, on the other hand, was second to last in the Eastern Zone. However,
nothing is ever certain in football, as Sunset were to find out to their
dismay.
North Side attacked at every possible opportunity, and
seemed to catch Sunset off guard with their play. In spite of a valiant
battle, Sunset could not cope with the North Side team, who took the game 5-2.
The win rocketed North Side up the standings, from sixth in the Eastern Zone
to fourth, one position behind Sunset.
Latinos FC took on Tigers FC at the Annex on Sunday, with
defending champions Latinos hoping to solidify their position near the top of
the Western Zone. Tigers FC was still winless in the tournament, and
desperately searching for their first points.
Latinos was always going to be a tough opponent, and in
spite of claiming a goal, Tigers could not hold off Latinos, who took the
match 3-1. Latinos are level on points with second placed George Town, but is
in third due to inferior goal difference.
Eastern Zone leaders
Money Express took on second placed Roma United in what
was expected to be the toughest match of the weekend. With both teams
undefeated and with 14 points from six matches, it was certain to be a tough
encounter. Both teams pushed hard, and the game was an exceptionally close-run
affair.
In the end it was Money Express who managed to pull clear
of Roma, taking the match 2-1. This leaves Money Express as leaders in the
Eastern Zone, three points clear of second placed Roma.
