LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Breaking Immigration Laws

Monday,  December 19, 2005

Dear Sir,

As stated in a recent news report Ignorance of the law is no excuse at all when a student living here almost lost her passport, student visa and missed a hefty fine when she hired someone who was classed as illegal according to the Immigration Laws.

Of course it is quite right, ignorance is no excuse. But the story got me thinking and that can be dangerous at times….. we have an immigration problem with overstayers and I have already suggested the Name and Shame them policy.

So how about putting pressure on all property owners who have overstayers living in their house or as in a lot of cases in sheds on the property owners’ land.

If you have someone staying on your property you must be responsible for knowing the immigration status of that person, sorry no excuse, and hefty fines should be imposed and for repeat offenders confiscation of property perhaps.

What are your thoughts?

Dale Fogis.
