LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Unwrapped for Oxfam a great idea
Thursday, December 22, 2005
Dear Sir,
I would like to say how much I enjoyed the article about
the students at George Hicks raising money for the Oxfam unwrapped Christmas
project. I must say I think that is the best idea I have heard for ages. What
better way to truly represent Christmas than to give to those less fortunate
than ourselves. I intend to participate in the project in future instead of
buying friends and family gifts I know they don’t really need. I will be
buying goats and clean water for those who need it.
The programme really offers the best of both worlds. With
the message sent to friends and family they know you were thinking of them but
sending the financial aspect of the gift where it is really needed.
We all have far too much here in the Western world and I
think it’s time to give to others whose only fault in life is to have been
born in a poor country.
I am not a Christian, I do not go to church but I believe
in my fellow human being no matter where he or she lives and believe
wholeheartedly heaven and hell are here now on earth. We are the lucky ones
enjoying heaven and the people of lesser developed nations are in hell.
This is not because they are sinners and we are good – it
is because we all live in an unfair world where the greedy and corrupt have
prevailed and deprived others.
This is a tiny way of fighting back and giving those less
fortunate than us a chance in life now.
I hope other people will take a leaf out of the young
students’ books at George Hicks and join in too.
W. Bartlett
