WITH storage space running scarce, the Airport Post
Office is again issuing an urgent appeal to its customers to collect parcels
left there for an extended period.
A fortnight ago, the post office made an urgent plea for
packages to be collected, as it struggled to handle the higher than usual
incoming and outgoing Christmas mail.
Anthony Williams, the Deputy Postmaster General, said
with the high volumes of post coming into Grand Cayman this year, storage
space is becoming crucial.
Mr Williams said mail continues to arrive in large
quantities but the rate of pick-up is low.
“We really need customers to pick up their packages
because space is critical at the moment, he said. “We have long exceeded our
real storage spaces and have taken to putting parcels on the floor.
In the first three weeks in December, the Airport Post
Office received close to 2,000 parcels.
According to the official, numerous attempts have been
made to contact the recipients, however, the response has been less than
satisfactory.
“We have been calling on them to come for their parcels,
especially those which have been here for a long time.
“We are not getting the kind of response we would have
liked at the moment,” he said.
Mr Williams said his office is coping with the level of
traffic taking place there at present but fear increase pressure in the last
minute rush to collect parcels.
At the moment we are coping with the large number of
packages coming in but we are not seeing quick response in picking them up.
Mr Williams noted that at the current rate of delivery
some customers might not receive their Christmas gift before 25 December.
The Airport Post Office will close its doors for a
Christmas break at 12:30 pm on Friday 23, December, and will reopen on
Wednesday 28, December.
“Time is running out on those who have to collect their
packages for Christmas. They have until 12:30 pm on Friday, after that we will
not be open until Wednesday,” Mr Williams added.
The General Post Office is currently running an appeal on
the Cayman Islands Government website, which reads:
“Postal Services are urgently asking the public to
immediately collect parcels once notified of their arrival.
“Post Offices have run out of space and need residents’
cooperation in clearing the backlog at their facilities.
“The Post Office will greatly appreciate the public’s
cooperation in this matter.”
