Local firm expands Investment Funds Team

William Helfrecht, Senior Counsel of Ogier and Glenn
Kennedy

Thursday,  December 29, 2005

With the registration of the 10,000th fund, local offshore legal experts Ogier said it was a reflection of the Cayman Islands’ dominant position in the offshore funds arena and in line with the continued growth of the funds industry the firm has brought on board a new attorney who specialises in this field.

Glenn Kennedy recently joined Ogier from Aird & Berlis LLP of Toronto, where he was a partner. Originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Glenn completed his Bachelor of Laws at the University of Manitoba in 1999. Glenn was called to the Bar in the Province of Ontario in January 2001.

Mr Kennedy specialises in investment funds, corporate transactions, financing and related investment structures and has joined the Ogier Business Law team. James Bergstrom, Partner in the Investment Funds section of Ogier’s Business Law Group welcomed him to his team.

“Glenn has just the experience and the attitude that we are looking for and which will enable him to be successful in the Cayman arena”, said Mr Bergstrom.

Ogier has also recruited a new article clerk. Martina de Lima holds an LL B from the University of Liverpool (2002) and was admitted to the New York Bar in 2003.

She graduated valedictorian from the Cayman Islands Law School, having been awarded prizes for top academic achievement in each year of the three-year degree programme, as well as the Dean’s Prize for Best Overall Exam Performance by a final year student and the Law Society Tim Shea Memorial Prize for Best Performance throughout the Honours Degree Programme.

This year, Ms de Lima completed the Professional Practice Course (PPC) with distinction. She also holds a BA in Psychology with a French minor from the University of Alberta.

Currently, Ms de Lima is working with partner James Bagnall in the Banking and Finance section of Ogier’s Business Law Group.

“We are delighted to have someone of Martina’s calibre involved in the Ogier training programme”, said Mr Bagnall.

“We are able to offer a high-level of training and practical experience for articled clerks, which complement their academic achievements, and provide a firm foundation for a successful career at Ogier”.

Ogier has acted as legal advisors on approximately 28 percent of CIMA registered funds over the last year and the expansion of the team of attorneys is timely.

The continued growth in offshore investment funds forecast for 2006 is likely to be paralleled by the growth of Ogier, the firm said.
