Career of the week

Simon Miller
Drug Counsellor

Friday,  January 6, 2006

One word comes to mind when Simon Miller looks at the year gone by, and the one ahead for the National Drug Council (NDC), and that is “change.”

Taking up the post of Project Manager with the Council in 2000 meant playing a significant role in changing the way substance abusers view drugs, in particular those Mr Miller works with in prison.

“Everyday I want to reach one individual about one fact, and that is that doing drugs is not natural. It is unnatural,” he said.

“Also, I want to know that when they leave they can make the transition back into society.”

Speaking about the Council itself he said, 2005 was all about change.

“There was our relocation from Paddington Place to the Compass Building, due to damage from Hurricane Ivan and we had to continue with our work that could not be put on hold. When I look back at what happened to us in September 2004, and where we are now, I am simply amazed.”

Mr Miller said he is really excited about the year ahead in his position with the Council.

“We are now in a key position, to make a greater impact on drug-related issues locally and regionally. While I attended a regional conference recently it came home to me, in a much stronger way, how important a role the NDC plays among similar Councils in the region.

“Therefore, what is also exciting, and at the same time motivating, is that there is a leadership dynamic in relation to the work we do here at the NDC.”
