Police to confer on drugs

Friday,  January 20, 2006

The International Drug Enforcement Conference (IDEC), Caribbean group will be opened on Wednesday 25 January at the Marriott Hotel on Seven Mile Beach, by H.E. the Governor Stuart Jack, RCIPS Commissioner of Police Stuart Kernohan and the Special Agent in charge of the Caribbean Division, SAC Jerome Harris.

The two-day conference will provide a forum for an exchange of ideas, information and an opportunity for delegates to further the goals of their countries by working together to develop a regional approach to drug law enforcement by communication, cooperation and collaboration.

There are 21 countries in the Caribbean who are members of the IDEC with over 60 countries worldwide. Approximately 45 delegates are due to attend including Senior Agents in Charge of the DEA Miami and Caribbean Field Divisions as well as DEA Country Attaches from the region.

Presentations will be made by Regional Intelligence Analysts, Cayman forensic scientists and the US Military.

Detective Chief Superintendent Derek Haines is the current Chairman of the IDEC Caribbean and was the Secretary of the organisation for 11 years before that.

“There has been tremendous progress in the past ten years in the areas of Operations, Intelligence sharing and Training for officers who work directly with drug enforcement,” said DCS Haines.

“IDEC has been a driving force in developing these strategies and I am proud that the Cayman Islands has been chosen to host this important regional conference.”
