Local ladies experience college basketball

The girls hang out next to the court at FIU

Monday,  January 30, 2006

The Women of Valor Basketball Team, accompanied by Coach Redver Ebanks and chaperone Kimberly Watler, recently travelled to Miami to view the Florida International University ‘Fun n Sun’ Tournament.

The tournament was attended by Northern Illinois University, Coppin State University, and the University Arkansas.

The purpose of this trip was to expose the young ladies to basketball at a higher level, meet the FIU players, and see the hard work that it takes to become a college athlete. They also went through some vigorous practices to get them ready to participate in the CIBA Women’s League.
The Women of Valor not only viewed the tournament, but also played an active role in the tournament, cheering the home team FIU on to rally from 21 points down to defeat the University of Arkansas.

Their cheering helped lift the spirits of the home team, and were thanked for this after the game when they had a chance to get autographs and meet their favourite players.

“I feel that the exposure was great for these young ladies, I can see the difference in their enthusiasm at practice. With these results I am optimistic that we can put together a competitive female team for the upcoming junior Caribbean Championships in 2007,” said Coach Ebanks.

The Women of Valor would like to thank Caribbean Utilities Company, Uncle Bill’s Home Improvement Centre, Artistry and Design, Cartronics, Focus Beauty Salon, and the Royal Bank of Canada for their generous donations.
