When righteousness becomes hate

Friday,  February 3, 2006

Hate is one four letter word that can be blamed for man’s misdeeds and even murder. This last week was not a proud week for Cayman, especially in talk radio. The depth and passion expressed against gays by people proclaiming to be “Christians” need to check that they haven’t fallen into the age old trap of hate versus righteousness. I decided to Google the word ‘hate’. Try it and you won’t believe the number of sites that come up.

The internet is full of groups advocating hatred and supporting it through scripture quotes. Have Cayman Christians become so overcome by the fast-paced development and therefore lessening in their own numbers that they have crossed from righteousness to hate?

I hope not.

While I respect everyone’s views on homosexuals, pure hatred is and always will be repulsive to me. Our schools have tried to teach of wrong turns that human beings have made throughout history in the hope that we don’t repeat them.

Nazi-ism, slavery, Religious Crusades for examples. All of these episodes in history murdered mercilessly those who didn’t fit one dominant group’s social norm.

Is that what rapid growth has brought upon us? Perhaps the former tolerant and loving Caymanian has had the ‘last straw’.

Whatever the cause – it’s ugly and it was heard the world over as most of the media outlets also have internet web sites.

To live in peace is not easy especially when someone is so offensive to you. To be peaceful is one of the hardest, most Christian things to do.

To recognize that another’s choices in the way they live is just that. Their choice, their responsibility. You know what you stand for and what you believe in. Rejoice in that and be at peace.

Oh yeah and why not direct some of that energy against issues such as drugs and gangs that are tearing our society apart. Hmmmm?
