St Ignatius, Bodden Town dominate

Bodden Town in control

Scholars and Bodden Town compete for the ball

George Town and East End fight for possession

Gaining control for St Ignatius

Tuesday,  February 8, 2006

The second week of the Queensgate Youth League saw a number of teams get a second run at glory, while George Town SC got their first chance to show whether they will be a force to be reckoned with.

Scholars took on Bodden Town at Triple C, hoping to improve on their close 1-0 loss against Future the previous week. They were up against a Bodden Town team that had run rampant over Academy the previous week. It was soon clear that Bodden Town were intent on being every bit as ruthless against Scholars as they were against their previous opponents, as the team took an early lead and never looked back.

At the final whistle it was a convincing 6-0 victory for Bodden Town, leaving them undefeated while Scholars had to be satisfied with their second straight loss.

St Ignatius had also scored a massive win in their first league match, and were looking to continue in a similar vein when they took on Academy at St Ignatius. Academy threw everything they had at St Ignatius, and gained a goal for their efforts, but it was not enough. St Ignatius racked up a massive eight goals, taking a comfortable 8-1 victory, thereby remaining unbeaten.

The match between George Town and East End seemed headed for a forfeit as East End could not manage to fill a team. George Town, on the other hand, had an over-abundance of players. So George Town coach Gillie Seymour decided that, rather than letting all the players go home without playing, he would ‘loan’ some of his players to East End, so that the teams could at least have a match. Although the match eventually listed as a forfeit on the score sheets, the combined East End/George Town team put up a solid challenge to George Town, restricting their opponents to three goals. The fact that a match was played may not make much difference to the score sheets at the end of the day, but it most certainly made a difference to the kids involved.

After all, they are in it for the love of the game, and deserve the chance to play, regardless of the ‘official’ status of the match.

This week will see a couple of interesting match-ups when the teams take to the field on Tuesday 7 February at 4:00 pm.

Future will put their unblemished record on the line when they take on the St Ignatius juggernaut at St Ignatius. Both teams are still undefeated, but no other team has managed to match the total dominance shown thus far by St Ignatius. George Town will be in a similar position when they face Bodden Town at Triple C. With both teams still undefeated, it is likely that one will lose that title by the end of the day.

The match between Scholars and East End at George Hicks High School will give both teams another shot at scoring their first victory of the season.
