Sports Person of the Week

Perry Levy

Friday,  February 10, 2006

Growing up with Michael Jordan as an idol, Perry Levy knew early on that basketball would play a major role in his life. When he started playing the game, there were no basketball courts close to his home, so Perry and his friends would get a milk crate from a local gas station, nail it to a coconut tree, and use it as a hoop.

The only playing surface was the street, so they would occasionally have to halt their game to let the cars pass.

These days, Perry has much better facilities to play on, but the same passion for the game still remains.

He spends his week working as a Corporate Administrator at Walkers SPV Limited, and likes to spend his free time entertaining his daughter Aaliyah, as well as hanging out with his family and friends.

“I guess basketball was the one thing I could always turn to when all other things weren’t going smoothly. It’s basically the only therapy I’ve needed to this point in my life”, he says.

His greatest sporting moment thus far was leading his team, Esso Blazers, to the CIBA Under 25 Basketball Championship.

Although basketball is Perry’s first love, it is not his only love.

He recently started playing flag football, a sport he finds amazing for the mix of local and foreign players and the phenomenal growth it has shown over the last couple of years.

Perry has also been chosen to represent Cayman at the Flag Football World Cup in Panama City, Florida at the end of March.

“It’s great fun, great competition, and I can fully recommend it to anyone,” he says.

In spite of all his sporting successes, Perry does not claim all the credit,” he said.

“I would like to thank my parents for instilling in me the qualities required to succeed in life, my other family members and friends for always being there in times of need, my team-mates for their support, my coach Shawn Pitterson for trusting me and being there for off-court issues, and everyone who has affected my life positively in one way or another.”
