Love is in the air on Radio Cayman

RADIO CAYMAN is jealously guarding the identity of couples to be rewarded on Valentine’s Day for keeping the love flame burning in their marriage for over 40 years.

The station will host a three-hour love programme on Valentine’s night, beginning at 7:00 on its 89.9 and 93.9 FM bands and will be heard on Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman.

One of the organisers, Paulette Conolly, said the 14 February event promises to be a hit and listeners should not miss a moment.

“Radio Cayman will enhance whatever they are doing for Valentine’s Day,” she said.

Mrs Conolly, the station’s Sales Manager, said prizes would be offered to some couples that have been married for at least 40 years.

According to her, family members of couples married for over 40 years have submitted their names and some information about them to qualify for the contest.

She noted that the results would only be known during the live show, which has the station’s youthful announcers Joel Wilson and Dionne O’Garro as hosts.

“Don’t want to disclose these yet” and “not yet confirmed”, said Mrs Conolly to Cayman Net News’ questions on the awardees and what prizes they would receive.

She said the general public would also win prizes in a show designed with call-in segments, love songs, love poems, interaction, and creative announcing and production from the entire staff.

However, she confirmed that Digicel, Alex Variety, Island Photo, Funky Tangs, Party Mart and Party Land would provide some of the prizes.

The sponsors so far are Digicel, Godfrey’s Enterprise, Edie’s Decor, Party Land, Virginia’s Beauty Centre, Alex Variety Store, Tres Chic and Island Companies.

Mrs Conolly said there are still opportunities for family members to submit the names of those qualified for the contest.

“Response from the businesses have been great but not too many people have submitted letters on their parents who have been married for over 40 years, we need more submissions,” she said.

And she cautions, “Radio Cayman is number one, as recent statistics have proven and if you miss listening to 89.9 FM you will miss a fantastic Valentine’s Day.”

Hosts Dionne O’Garro and Joel Wilson will from 7:00 on Valentine’s night weave their magic under the theme: “When the sun falls the night calls.”

Ms O’Garro said, “I enjoy it when the callers call in and request songs, because that’s what women want when their men call in and express themselves.

“Valentine’s Day is a wonderful day for the couple. I’m going to express myself with words on that night,” she added.

She wants all age groups to partake of the love package, which has been an annual part of Radio Cayman’s programming for many years.

Mr Wilson promised a night charged with romance and urges the men to keep up the tradition of calling in to dedicate love songs to their lovers.

“If I were in a relationship and I know that my girl enjoys listening to the radio and she enjoys a certain song, I would simply call in or write a poem about her and recite it on the radio,” he advised.

“Women enjoy poetry as well as good music. The fact is you can call in the programme or recite your poem; we will take it,” he also said.

Mrs Conolly said Radio Cayman intends to make its listeners feel extra special and loved on Valentine’s Day.

“We want them to feel that they’re extra special. We really want to honour the married couples that have set a good example for our younger married couples,” she said.
