Local law firm Appleby Spurling Hunter has been receiving some international accolades recently, with a number of international publications recognizing the offshore law firm.

Chambers and Partners Global Directory awarded Appleby Spurling Hunter a number one ranking in Bermuda.

Appleby was the only firm to receive rankings in all three of the key offshore jurisdictions of Bermuda, the Cayman Islands and the British Virgin Islands. The Directory also singles out individual attorneys for recognition and the Appleby organisation had the most number of attorneys to be so recognized.

According to the recently released online version of the directory, “Excellent staff, good coverage and a strong brand have led to the firm’s recognition as “a top-class offshore law firm.”

Chambers particularly recognised Senior Partner Bruce Putterill, ‘A quality act’ and Partner Andrew Bolton was said to be ‘on a different page altogether from anyone else’ because of “assured, down-to-earth, solid advice that you can trust and rely on.”

Jeremy Walton was commended on his ‘tenacious approach’ and was given special mention for his litigation work for the liquidators of the Flightlease Group in its USD250 million multi-jurisdiction dispute with GATX Financial Corporation.

Up and coming Associate Jonathon Tarboton also impressed with his “incisive comments.”

The International Financial Law Review also released its online listings of recommended firms. Appleby once again was given a top spot, with client comments such as, “yards ahead of the others” and “extremely high standards and practical approach to solving problems.”

Additionally, the 23 January 2006 issue of The Lawyer, lists Appleby as tied for a 4th place ranking of all offshore law firms, based on the number of partners in the firm.

The Practical Law Company’s online ranking, 2 February 2006, also recognizes Appleby’s recent success with both Andrew Bolton, joint litigation practice group head, and Nigel Clifford QC, Senior Counsel, receiving the highest possible rating of ‘3-stars’. Other Appleby attorneys to receive recognition for their outstanding work include Partner Jeremy Walton.

“We hear more and more of an emerging “magic circle” of offshore law firms and we are very pleased to see all of these publications rank our firm as one of this elite group,” said Group Managing Partner, Peter Bubenzer.

“We are particularly gratified to see the continued affirmation of the expansion of Appleby following on our recognition in 2005 as the Offshore Law Firm of the Year.”

Appleby Spurling Hunter describes itself as a leading provider of sophisticated, specialised offshore legal services, with more than 430 lawyers and offices in the key offshore jurisdictions of Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands and the Cayman Islands, as well as offices in the financial centres of Hong Kong and London.
