Local athletes receive recognition in USA
Tuesday, February 14, 2006
With the number of excellent performances by Cayman’s collegiate athletes in the USA, it is not surprising that they are being recognised for the performances not only at home, but also in the USA.
Michael Letterlough of Florida International University was named Sun Belt Conference Field Performer of the Week last week for breaking his own school record in the weight throw for the second straight meet, with a personal best distance of 17.10 metres. This was good enough for fifth place among the collegians in the University of Florida’s Pepsi Invitational.
Carlos Morgan of Lindsey Wilson College met the automatic qualifying standard for the long jump in the NAIA Championships, which will be held in Johnson City, Tennessee from 9 to 11 March. His leap of 7.09 metres at the Tiger Invitational at Depauw University assured him of his place.
His brother Carl Morgan’s leap of 6.98 metres in the same competition meant that he made the provisional qualifying standard for the NAIA National Meet.
