Cadets celebrate their achievements

Cadets during their passing out parade last month

Wednesday,  March 8, 2006

The Cayman Islands Cadet Corps held its fourth passing-out ceremony recently, on the grounds of the First Assembly of God Church, Crewe Road, in the presence of cadet parents, friends, and well-wishers.

Standing-in for H.E the Governor, the Hon George McCarthy, Chief Secretary, inspected the recruits in formation, took the salute prior to and during the march past, and handed out certificates of accomplishment to the new cadets.

In a short address to the audience at the end of the ceremony, he commended members of the Corps for their work with the youth, thanked the parents for their support, and congratulated the 21 teenagers who had become cadets that afternoon.

After administering the cadet oath to the new cadets, Commandant, Colonel Phillip Hyre, encouraged them to always include God in their plans and activities.

Following this, acting Deputy Commandant, Major Andy White, assisted by Capt. Ricardo Henry, Training Officer, handed out two special awards to the most outstanding male and female cadets in the batch -- Devin Douglas and Shemina Barnes, respectively.

In making their contribution to the event, the more advanced cadets later delighted the audience by performing a mini tattoo arranged by Lt. James Walrond, assisted by Sergeants A. Johnson and Michael Reid.

The recruits were presented by Under-Officer Winston Gall, Platoon Commander, supported by Warrant Officer II Ian Miller and Cadet Sergeant Denecia Jairam, while Cadet Lance Corporals Theodore Kelly, Jr. and Martina Bodden creditably served as joint Masters of Ceremony for the event.

The next batch of recruits is expected to pass-out during the Corps’ annual camp scheduled for July 2006.
