Cable & Wireless Sea Swim set for the weekend

Friday,  March 10, 2006

There is nowhere more perfect than Cayman when it comes to open water swimming. A warm and mirror-like ocean can tempt even the most pool-bound swimmers out of their routine training environment to enjoy what nature has to offer.

The Cayman Islands Amateur Swimming Association’s Open Water season kicks off this weekend, with the 19th Annual Cable & Wireless 800 Metre sea swim. The event will take place on Saturday, 11 March, with the start scheduled for 4:00 pm from Governor’s Beach, with the finish at Public Beach on West Bay Road.

With many of Cayman’s top young swimmers having completed a 10k fundraising swim for the Carifta games recently, they are likely to find the 800-metre distance a walk in the park.

Challenging the CARIFTA team-members for top honours will be the Masters group, which contains some very fast adult swimmers that have recently arrived on Island. The event is not only about the fastest swimmers, and non-competitive swimmers will find the race an enjoyable excuse to enjoy a leisurely swim in some of the Caribbean’s finest waters.

Trophies will be awarded for the top three male and female finishers in all age categories. All swimmers, regardless of finishing position, will receive a t-shirt, refreshments and pizza at the end of the race. Participants in the Cable & Wireless 800 Metre sea swim will be required to wear distinctive C&W swim-caps during the race. These caps will be provided free upon registration.

Registration for the 19th Annual Cable & Wireless 800 Meter sea swim will be held in the Governor’s Beach parking area prior to the race, from 3:00 pm to 3:45 pm. Entry fees for CIASA Members are CI$5 for children and CI$10 for adults, while non-members pay CI$10 for children and CI$15 for adults.

Race registration forms may be downloaded from www.caymanswimming.com
