The Bean Bag race is hard work

A huge number of supporters turned up for the Primary School Sports Events last week, and while parking became a problem, the boost it gave to the kids participating was obvious.

The two primary schools on Cayman Brac, West End and the Combined Creek and Spot Bay, were joined by students of the smallest school in the Cayman Islands – the Little Cayman Education Service.

Most track events were held Monday evening 27 February, and the spectators’ section was packed, as parents, guardians and friends came straight from work to cheer on their children.

Bean bag races for the little ones, plus field events of high jump, long jump, ball-throw and shot-put, took place Tuesday morning, right before the beginning of half term. Brac Sport

“There were many more participants from the schools this year. More kids took part due to the changes made by introducing preliminary rounds before the finals,” he explained.

“By holding preliminaries, every one of the children in the primary schools had a chance to compete in an event over the two days. All credit to the principals and Peripatetic PE Teacher Flynn Bush for making the changes” added Coach Sanford.

On a down note, Sanford said that one thing the Brac can improve on for athletics in general, would be a way of either upgrading the present track to a higher standard, or finding other means of making lanes.

“This has caused issues as always, and it’s beginning to become a headache,” he said.

“I think that, overall, everyone enjoyed the day. In my opinion, this was the most supported Primary Sports Day I have seen in many years, and I’d like to thank the parents, guardians and the community for the support that they gave.”

He added, “The kids enjoyed the day, and all walked away with something positive. For me as a coach, I saw some potential athletes, and encourage kids to sign up for the Brac Athletic Club practices, so that they can learn the skills they need.”

Practices take place on Tuesday and Thursday evening from 4:30 to 6:00 pm.

The Divisional Girl Champions were: Div-1 Eryn Ritch, Div-2 Cameilia Gillispie, Div-3 Cameille Brown, Div-4 Tehri-Ann Brown, Div-5 Hayley Grizzel, Div-6 Keristin Scott.
