On Monday, 13 March through Wednesday, 15 March, the Water Authority of the Cayman Islands will host the 2nd meeting of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Steering Committee for the preparation of a WHO Guidance Document on Desalination for Safe Water Supply.
The opening ceremony will commence on Monday, with working meetings to be held through to Wednesday at the Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort on West Bay Road.
In 2004, Water Authority Director, Dr. Gelia Frederick-van Genderen, was selected as a Member of the Steering Committee, comprised of 7 international experts from around the world. In addition to the Cayman Islands, members were selected from Australia, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Egypt and the United States. Dr. Houssain Abouzaid of the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office in Egypt is Chair.
The desalination of seawater or brackish water is a major and rapidly growing source of drinking water in many parts of the world. This method of water production is used by the two water utilities in the Cayman Islands.
Advances in the technology and economics of desalination are rapidly making this process one of the most desirable options for providing high quality safe drinking water in regions all over the world.
