Latter Day Saintschange name 'Community of Christ'
The Peace Chapel congregation, a memberof the denomination formerly known as the Reorganised Church ofJesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, celebrated, its new denominationalname, 'Community of Christ', last Friday, 6 April.
The members of the church located on Elgin Avenue in downtownGeorge Town, held a service marking the worldwide launch of thenew name and the 171st anniversary of the founding of the church.
Community of Christ is an international denomination with approximately250,000 members in more than 50 nations. Legally organised in1830, the church has been known as the Reogranised Church of JesusChrist of Latter Day Saints since 1860. In recent years, manyhave expressed a desire for a name that more adequately representsthe church's theology and mission: "We proclaim Jesus Christand promote communities of joy, hope, love, and peace."
Delegates at the church's 2000 World Conference approved the Communityof Christ name with a nearly 80 percent affirmative vote.
