Week Activities

This year, Earth Day 22 April, will kickoff Earth Week in the Cayman Islands. A range of exciting activitieswill fill the week, themed "Love the Earth! Love Cayman first!"

The grand finale offers a variety of island- wide clean-up activities scheduled for 28 April. The Departmentof Environmental Health (DEH), the National Trust for the CaymanIslands, the Chamber of Commerce, the Department of Environmentand the Cayman Tourism Alliance have combined their energy andresources to present this entire week of activities devoted toprotecting and preserving our environment.

In addition to these clean-up events, thefollowing activities and promotions are planned:Red Sail Sports,National Trust and Kaibo Yacht Club are offering a Wetlands Tourand celebration to kick off Earth Day on Sunday, 22 April.

The Department of Environmental Health andNational Trust have worked together to produce some valuable resourcesfor teachers and students. This information will be deliveredin early April to all schools in the Cayman Islands.

Volunteer groups are planning clean-upson both Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. Please contact the CaymanBrac offices of DEH at 948-2321 or National Trust at 948-2390to get involved.Foster's Food Fair, in conjunction with IGA, Gain,Bounty, Tropicana, and Kraft, will be offering "environmentallyfriendly" cloth shopping bags with a special purchase.UnderwaterSupply is donating sea-itch cream to participants involved inany of the underwater activities.

The Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Gardens willoffer free admission to all residents on Saturday, 28 April.JoeTourist (946-5638) is arranging for artists to visit the schools.These artists will demonstrate how to create art from treasuresfound on the beach.Each year, worldwide, thousands of creaturessuch as turtles, fish, and birds are killed, injured or maimedby swallowing plastic or becoming entangled in the debris thatis thrown on the land or into the sea.
