Jamaica's Comedianextraordinaire, Oliver Samuels
What happens when you cross a genius comedianwith the make believe world of magic and Genies? You end up witha night filled with sidesplitting laughter and a greater appreciationof the art of Jamaican comedy as only Oliver Samuels can deliverit.
This Jamaican "King of Comedy"once again takes center stage in "Oliver and the Genie",a play about runaway slaves on a Jamaican plantation in 1838.Upon running away from their Master and his harsh treatment, Oliverand his friends encounter a Genie who has traveled back in timefrom the year 2002. They convince him to take them to the future,to the 'sweet and free' modern day Jamaica.
How does such an apparently serious plotmake for a magical musical comedy? It is all owed to the talentsof award winning playwright, Patrick Brown, a Director of theJambiz International team.
An Engineer by profession, Brown is oneof the Caribbean's most exciting and prolific comedy writers. In writing this play he hoped to not only create a hilarious,feel-good comedy. His aim was to also stimulate provoking socialcommentary. Brown ensures that "there is a message in theplay for everyoneyoung and old".
Oliver is renowned for his many smash hits, including "Oliver at Large", "Breadfruit Kingdom"and "Oliver's Posse". His plays go far beyond the bordersof the Caribbean. He is well known, especially among West Indiansliving in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
The play's star-studded cast includes ClaudettePious, Christopher Daley, Dahlia Harris and newcomer, FrancineMorais. They are all experienced actors who combine their uniquetalents to make this play a tremendous success.
