Saba Gov'tCommitted to Cable & Wireless
The Island Government of Saba is committedto Cable & Wireless' (C&W) operation remaining on theisland for a long time to come. "C&W is a valued partnerto Saba. We appreciate them being here," Leader of Government,Commissioner Will Johnson told the Saba Government InformationService (SGIS).
Johnson added that a number of calls havecome in about the C&W facility on the island. The Island Governmentis the owner of the property at Mount Scenery, the highest pointin the Dutch Kingdom.
C&W and the Island Government have hadan excellent relationship over the past 30-years. The Island Governmententered into an agreement with C&W back in January 1992 fora 10-year period.
Article 4.2 of the agreement says: "Thisagreement shall automatically be renewed between the parties forconsecutive periods of 10 calendar years, unless terminated inwriting by one of the parties subject to at least 12-months noticebefore the end of any 10-year period."
In March 1999, C&W informed the ExecutiveCouncil by letter, "We are pleased to confirm that C&Wis fully committed to remaining on Saba, and to retention of theexisting facility located on Saba."
Johnson told SGIS, that the Executive Councildid not see the need to give notice to terminate the agreement, and is automatically renewed for another 10-year period.
"It is beneficial to the Island Territoryand the people of Saba. No one has the authority on behalf ofthe Council to talk to C&W on our behalf. I would like topoint out that there have been rumors of other people pretendingto represent the Council," Johnson explained to SGIS.
The Commissioner concluded that this matteris now closed.
