Cayman's perennial prisonescape artist is now entering his
second week of freedom, raising renewed questions as to ...
What Makes Steve Run?

Prison escapee,Steve Manderson, Attorney, Steve McField
"He is trying to get somebody'sattention anybody, because he is innocent..!". So says aclose friend of Cayman's premiere prison escape artist, SteveManderson now out on his seventh time on the lam six fromthe prison, and once from the lock up facility at the downtownPolice Headquarters since he was convicted in the middle 80s forthe killing of a prison guard, a Mr. Powell at H. M. Prison atNorthward.
While serving a prison term in the middle80s, Steve Manderson, who was sharing a cell with another prisoner, one 'Roper'- were involved in a fracas in the cellblock to whichthey were assigned, when they barricaded themselves in the cellin which they were staying together.
The murdered prison guard was attemptingto cut away the hinges off the cell door when he received a fatalwound to his neck. Before dying, he was able to walk approximately40 50 feet from the cell block to the main gate in the prisoncompound where he collapsed.
"Steve Manderson is innocent"claims Attorney Steve McField who represented him during trial."I was prevented from calling material witnesses, and thereforemy efforts to get a fair trial for Steve was oppressed. Not eventhe expert witnesses we secured were able to make their presentations."
According to reports from an informed source,Steve Manderson's latest escape was facilitated with a metal rodhe fashioned to hoist himself over the inner fence of the prisoncompound, and used bedding to maneuver the razor sharp wire atopthe fence. He escaped through a hole which was cut in the newlyconstructed outer security fence, which has been installed ata cost of nearly two million dollars since the prison riots oflate 2000.
Cayman Net Newshas learned from officials that efforts were underway to re-openthe case of murder against him which put Steve Manderson in prisonfor life. The prison riot and a subsequent directive from theGovernment's Legal Department also prevented this from happeninguntil the convict's last appeal was heard by the Privy Councilin London.
"This may not be possible though, becausethe time allowed to lodge an appeal is out of time" confirmedMr. McField.
It is reported that that it may have taken as long a month tocut away the door to the maximum security cell door from whichSteve Manderson was held. It is understood that there is no securitycheck made in that section of the block between 9:00 PM and 6:00AM, so there was ample time in which to work away during the night.
The longest spell spent outside of prisonby this convicted escape artist during his many breakouts wasfour weeks. With an all out effort by the RCIP working aroundthe clock, the officers are leaving no lead unturned until theyhave re-captured Steve Manderson.
