The Cayman Islands Basketball Association (CIBA), the leading governing body of youth basketball, recently unveiled its new logo.

The new brand, designed by local artist Kevin Goring, represents a green sea turtle preparing to play a basketball game. Given that the sea turtle is prominently used as a national symbol, members of CIBA selected this figure on the basis of Cayman's seafaring history and culture.

Years ago, sea turtles were found in great abundance around the Islands. With a national symbol such as this one that unifies the history, heritage and beauty of the Cayman Islands, a commemorative emblem that was parallel to this theme and to its strategic visions for the non-profit organisation was formed.

From the Islands' national flag, the coat of arms show three stars to represent the three islands, Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. Similar symbols were used in CIBA's logo to reflect the Island's history and its remarkable talent of Cayman's youth. The colour, green, represents the Islands' reputation for its sea turtles, the blue and white background represents the Caribbean Sea, and the colour red, represents the Island's ties with Britain, our mother country.

The logo also reflects the values and customs developed to represent the corporate image of CIBA. It illustrates the teamwork, sportsmanship and fun through the spirit of basketball at all levels of the game. Commenting on the logo presentation is CIBA President Mr. Tony Scott, "Our new brand identity is the hope and sense of determination we need to continue building a positive foundation for Cayman's youth," Mr. Scott adds, "This form of branding will make the organisation more identifiable, and will serve as a vital marketing vehicle which will be used in its efforts to promote youth basketball locally and overseas."

Founding member Mr. John Jefferson Jr. formed the Cayman Islands Basketball Association in 1977. The purpose of its formation was to sanctify an organized basketball game, where young members of the local community learned the fundamentals of the game to play against others competitively.

Today, the premier youth basketball provider offers league and tournament programmes for youngsters under 19 years, as well as for men and women. The organisation also provides refereeing and coaching sessions, summer camps for young children, and opportunities for players to build team and leadership qualities.
