New Committee to Focus on Transportation
The first steering committee meeting for the 2025 Grand Cayman National Roads Plan was held Wednesday, 2 April.
The Permanent Secretary for the Ministry responsible for Works, Kearney Gomez chairs the fifteen-person board. It includes representatives from Public Works, Lands and Survey, the Department of Environment, Planning, Government Information Services (GIS), Department of Tourism, Department of Vehicle Licensing & Transport, Water Authority and Cayman Islands Real Estate Brokers Association (CIREBA).
Together the group will begin to develop a comprehensive long-range transportation plan that supports access, mobility and eco-nomic development. "Each of the policies that guide development as a balanced transportation system will be considered in the plan. The committee understands the importance of continuing to encourage the preservation of neighbourhoods, protecting the environment, enhancing the community's quality of life and promoting public transportation throughout this process," says the Minister responsible for Works, Hon. Linford Pierson, OBE, JP.
The need for public involvement
is vital to the success of this project explains the Deputy Chief
Engineer for Public Works Mark Scotland, "We'll need co-operation
from the public to successfully complete this exercise, the end
result will be a comprehensive plan that serves as an excellent
guide for the future growth of our transportation system."
He notes that GIS will be assisting the team in the public involvement
process.
Public Work's Transportation Planning Unit has taken the project
under its wing. "We've put together an extremely knowledgeable
committee to assist us with this plan and we're all looking forward
to getting things underway," comments Transportation Engineer
Edward Howard. "This 25-year plan will prove extremely useful
as our islands continue to develop. We're being proactive about
our current and future transportation needs," he concludes.
