Kournikova out of Berlin

BERLIN (AFP) ­ Russian glamour girl Anna Kournikova is out of the 1.2 million dollar German Open in Berlin starting on May 5 having picked up an injury since being granted a wild card, organisers said Friday.

Last week, World No. 1 Serena Williams also withdrew, to allow herself time to time prepare for other upcoming major events.

Venus Williams of the United States will be top seed while other top names include compatriot Jennifer Capriati and Belgian pair Justine Henin-Hardenne Kim Clijsters.

De Bruijn off to worlds

AMSTERDAM (AFP) ­ Dutch triple Olympic champion Inge De Bruijn booked a berth in the July world swimming championships on Friday after making the qualifying time for the 50m freestyle at the Dutch national championships here.

The 29-year-old De Bruijn clocked 25.12sec, safely inside the 25.55 minimum mark for qualification, despite a long absence from competition and a month after her return to training.
De Bruijn is also hoping to qualify for the 50m butterfly and the 100m butterfly.
