It is not unusual for peopleto have questions regarding the training and experience of theirchiropractic doctor. Patients are often amazed by their chiropractorsabilities, and wonder how they learned these skills.

Educational requirementsleading to the Doctor of Chiropractic degree (D.C.) are similarto that of any other physician. This including two to four yearsof undergraduate study with emphasis in the natural sciences (biology, chemistry, etc.), followed by a minimum of four years of studyin an accredited chiropractic college.

The four to five year chiropracticcurriculum includes core sciences (anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, etc.), and clinical sciences (physical diagnosis, pathology, orthopedics, neurology, radiology, lab diagnosis, chiropractic analysis, chiropracticadjusting techniques, etc.). An internship is served at outpatientclinics that are owned and run by the chiropractic colleges.

The Chiropractic profession, over its 100+ year history, has evolved into the largest, non-drug,non-surgical healing system in the world. The Doctor of Chiropractic(D.C.) is licensed as a primary, portal-of-entry health care providerthroughout the United States, Canada, and in most foreign countries.Chiropractic colleges receive their accreditation from the Councilon Chiropractic Education, which is a branch of the federal government'sDepartment of Health, Education and Welfare.

Since chiropractic careis an art (the spinal adjustment), there can be variation in treatmentmethods from one D.C. to another. These differences will be basedon where and when they attended chiropractic college, their post-graduatetraining and the individual chiropractors personal experience.Of course this is true for any type of doctor.

However, since chiropractorswork directly upon the patient with their hands, these differencescan be more noticeable. Your chiropractor may use a firm adjustmentcoupled with deep tissue massage, while another may work verylightly using specialized instruments to perform the adjustment.

Regardless of which endof the spectrum your chiropractor practices, chiropractic spinaladjustments are extremely safe and effective in the hands of aqualified Doctor of Chiropractic. We can see this in the highrate of success and patient satisfaction, but also by the factthat chiropractors pay the lowest malpractice premiums of anyphysicians in the United States.

Chiropractic physicianshave the opportunity to earn postdoctoral board certifications(diplomate status) in the areas of orthopedics, neurology, sportsmedicine, radiology, nutrition, and occupational health. Theseboard certifications require an additional three years of study, written and practical examinations, and may require publishingin a peer-reviewed journal.

Many chiropractors developfurther qualifications in multi-disciplinary fields. These fieldsof study include all types of doctors within their ranks, andshow how integrated many chiropractors are within the health carefield.
